There are so many things about the military that can really rub me the wrong way. But, there are so many things I love about the military. It’s a love hate relationship to be honest with you. Kind of like the dentist, we hate going but we LOVE the benefits.
When people ask me, “What do you love about the military?” And they often do, its actually the second question people ask me after, “How do you do it?” (that’s the first question but a whole other topic for another time). My answer is TRAVEL!! I never blink twice about the answer. You guys its like a vacation! A paid vacation each time I move.
Now, don’t get me wrong its not always the best places in the world. But, it would have been a place I never seen or experienced all my life if it wasn’t for the military. Its such a journey!!
I have been traveling with the military since I was a kid. Growing up as a Milkid and traveling so much to different places all over the world has definitely given me a more open to change attitude. Making me a well rounded individual with a thirst for travel and a pallet for culture each step of the way.
Traveling like this also allows me to become friends with people I would’ve never thought in a million years. Creating lasting friendships and lifelong relationships with people because our lives crossed at a certain place in time due to the military. Meeting other military families from different walks of life and learning their cultures and lifestyles is so fun. Travel has taught me to be a more open minded person to different opinions, points of views and traditions never known before. It can be an eye opening experience, like no other.
The friends are amazing. But, the things I learn about each place, the foods, the people, and the cultures is absolutely irreplaceable & breathtaking. Sure, you could get a book from the library or watch a video online about the places, but its truly not the same. I get to experience “NEW” over and over, place after place time after time. I have definitely adopted some of these traditions and cultures into my life. The travel never gets boring, never gets old and always gets interesting. Each move has given me a different outlook on life and a great gage on how I want to live my life, incorporating different traditions that I have been so blessed to learn.
Sure, I can be bummed about uprooting and starting all over each time we get orders. But, I don’t!!! Not everyone has these opportunities handed to me. Each move I expand my horizons and fill my heart with the desire to learn about my new surrounding. I can’t get enough of it. I don’t think I will ever want to live in one place for more that 4 years. I know that sounds crazy but I just can’t imagine my life without the travel the military gives me. Each time I move I take piece of each place and place in my heart. Keeping the memories with me everywhere I go. No matter where I am at they will always be there and I will always be grateful.
So, Shout out to the Military because of you “Nothing shocks me and everything amazes me!
