3 quick holiday decorations to spruce up your military home

Last week I shared my list of favorite holiday decorating items. If those ideas were a little overwhelming, don’t fret! Here are a few quick changes you can make with little time involved (or clean up)!

Table runners and tablecloths.
A very quick way to add a splash of color and festivity to your home.

Decorating with plates.
Find any cute plate that you love and display it on a plate stand/easel.

Don’t forget about holiday foliage and flowers!

You can add them to your centerpiece or vignette or just put them in any vase for instant color.

Another cute idea (and very simple) is wrapping your art work with wrapping paper and adding a bow! Again, use what you already have at home first.

Where do I shop?
Everywhere! In my 5 holiday decorating item blog, I mention Wal-Mart, Marshall’s, Hobby Lobby, Michael’s and other national chains and warehouse store. A few more places to keep in mind when holiday shopping are the PX, Kohls, Target (my favorite store, but I find them to be on the pricey side!) TJ Maxx, Ollie’s, Home Depot and Lowes (they give a military discount, too), Kirklands and Joann Fabrics. Don’t forget about second hand stores such as Goodwill. Sometimes you can find some great things there that might just need a little sprucing up!

There are many places to draw inspiration from this holiday season. My favorite of course, is Pinterest! Another great resource for military spouses is a group on Facebook called White Walls. White Walls is a group for active-duty, guard, reserve, AGR service members and their card carrying dependent spouses as well as military vets and their spouses, and DOD civilians and their spouses. It’s a place to come together and share how we have decorated our homes and to get inspiration for others as well. It’s a great group of awesome and talented women who inspire me every day!

However you choose to decorate this holiday season, stay true to what you love! And remember, the decorations are not what make the holidays special, it’s the people you are with! I want to wish all of you a healthy and happy holiday season!

About the author:

Hi, I’m Kristin. Army wife, midwestern-er, hairstylist, lover of all things decor! I am currently residing in Maryland with my husband and loyal canine companion, Oscar. We have lived here for 8 years, which in Army time is basically forever. I have worked full time as a hairstylist for the past 10 years but spend any and all extra time trying to make our base housing feel like a home! For all the military wives out there, you know, the struggle is real.

My love for decorating started when we were first stationed in Maryland. Our wedding gift from my parents was to furnish our first home together…Willow Leaf Lane. I was amazed how much a little paint and a million trips to Home Goods could make! (Oh, did I tell you we have 3 Home Goods just in the immediate area?! SCORE!) After a few years in that house we decided to try living in base housing. 6 years later we’re still here! I dream about the day we have our “forever home” and I can do all the modifications I want! But until then, I will work with the white walls I was given.
